For the past fourteen(ish) years, I’ve been working as a lead designer and art director. And a photographer. And an illustrator. And a bit of writing. More recently though, have started offering Webflow development to clients for a seamless design to deployment journey. Nice!
Feeding all of this experience is an extensive background and collective experience servicing clients in pure-play retail, e-commerce, architecture, music, boardsports and outdoor industries. And of course, influences from all the culture, nature, artwork, counter-culture movements and creativity that comes with it. I’ve always said this but I reckon people who are deeply connected to nature (and sports which exist within nature) make the best creatives.
I've also run a parallel career in commercial + architectural photography of which you can see over here. I’ve humbly collected quite a few accolades for my photographic work.
I grew up on the Sunshine Coast. It has an optimistic moniker during summer sometimes (endless sub-tropical rain) but good surf and while still largely a huge country town, is fringed with incredible nature and interesting humans. I studied Architecture at QUT in Brisbane, before deciding it was a good idea to pursue my ability to draw very nice straight lines and be acceptably shit at maths in the field of Graphic Design. I did some extra study in cold, blustery, non-tropical Melbourne at RMIT. Lots of long drives down the coast to surf and wash-off the city.
I then did a bunch of junior roles pumping out print/poster work, a LOT of regional travel over the wide brown land doing a job shooting farms, carrots and potatoes as a photographer; some surf photography of course, I also wrote a couple of articles for a few surf mags (most didn’t get published - except for two) and the odd website while in the teething stage of my creative career. While I didn’t properly realise it at the time, I was very much full-time freelancing as a junior doing a whole bunch of different jobs.
All of this stuff, before landing a job at Volcom as a senior designer in 2013. I worked there a bit on the APAC stuff working across both print and digital. Often emailing the guys at the head office in the US about records/music and snowboarding. I surfed lots and explored a lot of the NSW coast. I also spent every weekend I possibly could in Jindabyne snowboarding during winter - often car camping. I then got understandably sick of Sydney. So, I went on a strict diet of nasi goreng and waves for a month in Indonesia and then went up and over to SurfStitch in Burleigh Heads (in their hey-day) in 2016. Happily back in my home-state of Queensland (warm water, excellent surf, good fruit - thank dog), I ended up in a creative lead position art directing and shooting campaigns… but then also rolling out the graphic treatments into OOH annndddd also producing graphics for the wonderful people running the in-house (vertical) brands. I got to work and shoot with some incredible brands and people. Kept me busy - but I’d managed to surf Burleigh point so much that Google Maps thought I lived in the carpark.
I then went properly full-time with my photography as my first foray into freelancing after realising I really, really enjoyed it at the start of 2017. I shot a bunch of outdoor campaign stuff and was always really cool seeing your work in out-of-home (OOH) as you’re driving to the beach or to go fishing… or something. I wish I had of taken more photos of this stuff and let this be a lesson to anyone reading; even if you’re a low-key, humble human, you will absolutely regret not having this stuff later on. Now, I can only tell you about it!
I slooooowly moved back into design again as I’d enjoyed the challenge of a few projects I’d had swung my way (and a bit of fodder in between photo jobs). I’d also picked up a few freelance illustration jobs, writing some copy (for the record, I enjoy this stuff, while not formally qualified) and a bit of web again. During this time, I’d had a bit of involvement with and supporting grassroots activism and community grants working for Patagonia; ACF and Surfrider Foundation. Really cool job. I’d also run a few beer deliveries for Black Hops brewing while they were starting out (I think everyone should do some random jobs to pad out their careers). I then started hurryslowly.studio in 2020 - although - the name didn’t come until some time later.
I have a Labrador retriever and while brilliantly smart, she is scared of spiders. I play guitar and drums in between creative blocks; and I surf lots, fish and I vote (see bumper stickers). I thoroughly enjoy working outdoors where possible. It makes me work better and is good for the soul. I’m an advocate for remote, collaborative work as it broadens our opportunities and horizons for new perspectives. We also have to commute less, so, that keeps the planet happy.
I'm also a proud member of AGDA.
And, don't forget to say "g'day!"
Ok, that's enough. Tap to close.
